Goal: Extensive in-house laboratory testing underpins diagnostic procedures
Target group: HAS patients
Milestones: Development of microbiology and establishment of the blood bank
An evaluation of the laboratory at HAS led to the first major project in summer 1997 with the founding of the partnership: the professional development of employees and the acquisition of new laboratory equipment. Swiss laboratory specialists were sent to HAS to train the local staff until the beginning of 2015. This project included the development of the microbiology with graduate students. Years of training Haitian laboratory technicians on site have continuously improved the reliability of laboratory tests and the safety of medical treatments.
A competent blood bank was also set up with the support of the Haitian Red Cross. Thanks to some major donors, the laboratory was renovated and equipment suitable for setting up the microbiology department was procured. The municipality of Küsnacht and other Lake Zurich municipalities also helped us to finance ongoing operations and reagents. Since then, comprehensive laboratory analyses have been conducted in-house, significantly improving diagnostics.
