70 Years of Hôpital Albert Schweitzer in Haiti

Hôpital Albert Schweitzer (HAS) in Haiti is celebrating its 70th anniversary. The story of this extraordinary hospital began with a moment of inspiration: after reading a magazine article about Albert Schweitzer, Gwen and Larimer Mellon were deeply moved by his commitment to providing medical care for underserved communities. Determined to pursue a similar vision, they completed medical training and opened Hôpital Albert Schweitzer in Deschapelles on June 26, 1956.

Since then, the hospital has remained open around the clock, serving approximately 450,000 people today. Yet the founders’ vision extended far beyond the walls of a hospital. In addition to the main facility, health centers were established in the surrounding mountain regions, along with reforestation and clean water projects and a broad community health program. The goal of these initiatives has always been to improve access to healthcare and promote long-term well-being throughout the region.

Even under the most challenging circumstances, HAS staff continued to care for their patients with remarkable dedication and compassion. Despite political and social challenges, they have never lost their courage or their hope. Moments of togetherness and celebration are therefore especially meaningful, offering opportunities to strengthen bonds and share joy.
