At the end of November, on International Children’s Day, the children were welcomed into the festively decorated hospital rooms. After more than two weeks of severe abdominal pain, fever, and diarrhea, 12-year-old Guerline* is admitted to HAS. Upon admission, Chief Surgeon Dr. David Renelus diagnoses Cherlourde with peritonitis caused by a perforation of the small intestine. Lab tests confirm a severe typhoid infection as the underlying cause.

7-year-old Junior* was admitted to HAS in a life-threatening condition after 9 days of unsuccessful treatment elsewhere. He arrived pale, with a high fever and swelling of his left thigh. Doctors diagnosed a severe bone marrow infection and massive anemia.

It was on an evening in the spring of 2013, when Ursula and Hermann Thomi of Bern/ Switzerland watched the end of a Swiss television report on some Haitian earthquake patients, amputees, who were being treated at HAS and receiving prostheses. The report showed life in Haiti after the disaster and how the people at HAS still are working to support the victims. Ursula and Hermann decided immediately that they would like to support a project at HAS and wrote a letter to Dr. Rolf Maibach, HAS Board member and director of the Swiss Partnership HAS Haiti.
