Goal: Basic healthcare and prevention are accessible and available to the communities around Tienne
Target group: Tienne catchment area
Milestones: Accurate diagnostics through on-site lab tests and ultrasound help avoid unnecessary transfers to the main hospital
In 2009, Tienne replaced the Gabriel health center, which had long since fallen into disrepair. Like all six centers, Tienne is an important relief for the constantly overcrowded central hospital HAS Haiti. With Tienne, an outstation was created to look after the health of the underserved population in the barren, eroded mountains. As a first point of contact, this outpatient clinic is also of crucial importance for the many malnourished children who are at risk of infection.
With its health centers, HAS has been a model for health care in numerous countries of the ‘global South’ from the very beginning. Thanks to vaccination campaigns, infectious diseases such as neonatal tetanus, diphtheria and measles have been eradicated in the Artibonite Valley. While the focus is on primary medical care and (reproductive) health prevention, drinking water supply and reforestation projects are also part of the concept to prevent serious diseases and relapses.
Today, we finance the day-to-day running of Tienne, including the mobile clinics, with a budget of CHF 200,000 thanks to the support of the foundation Albert-Schweitzer-Werk.
In 2024, there were 8,370 consultations at the Tienne health center.
