Survival of a Severe Infection

1. May 2024

Lab in Action

7-year-old Junior* was admitted to HAS in a life-threatening condition after 9 days of unsuccessful treatment elsewhere. He arrived pale, with a high fever and swelling of his left thigh. Doctors diagnosed a severe bone marrow infection and massive anemia. Immediate blood transfusion, oxygen therapy, and targeted antibiotic treatment saved Junior’s life.

The underlying cause of his illness was identified as sickle cell disease – a common congenital condition in Haiti. With the correct treatment, Junior is now protected against future relapses. This is just one of the many examples of how children’s lives are saved at HAS every single day.
