Renovation of the Neonatal Unit

Goal: To increase the bed capacity in the neonatal and pediatric units, improve workflow efficiency, and facilitate the implementation of hygiene measures.

Target group: Patients and their families, as well as staff of the neonatal and pediatric departments.

The solid structure, built in 1956, has withstood nearly 70 years of use and exposure to the elements. The inner masonry of the open-stone construction remains largely unchanged to this day. In order to meet the long-term, individual needs of sick newborns and children, a modern and spacious infrastructure was required.

The renovation and expansion of the neonatology unit and parts of the pediatric clinic have, on the one hand, created additional space to accommodate the steadily increasing number of patients. On the other hand, work processes and hygiene procedures have been significantly simplified, enabling more efficient operations. In addition, a dedicated area for breastfeeding mothers has been established near the neonatology unit.

The renovation was completed within just a few months in 2025, ensuring that operations in both departments could continue with minimal disruption. Various new pieces of equipment are still in the planning stage. The total cost of the renovation, including furnishings and the acquisition of medical equipment, amounts to USD 170,000.

The first 1,000 days from the beginning of a human life largely determine the biological and psychosocial foundations for the rest of that person’s life. Impairments during this period are usually irreversible. HAS ensures that newborns whose lives are already at risk for various reasons receive the care they urgently need as quickly as possible in order to overcome this critical phase. The newly renovated neonatal unit, supported by SPHASH, makes the stay easier for the smallest patients and their families, helping them return home stronger as soon as possible.
